Dan's parents bought Stonehaven in 2004 and let him and Emma-Jane run it how they saw fit. Three words sit on their business card: connection, evolving, quality.
105 paddocks, not 14
In 2006 they had 14 paddocks. Today they run 105. Big mobs graze hard for a few days, then the paddock rests 60 to 108 days. Every move logged.
Ground cover first
They cannot control the rain, so they control what sits on top of the grass. The goal is 100 percent ground cover and no bare dirt, every paddock rain-ready by November.
Why they went organic
Dan's reason is plain: keep the inputs low. Run the cattle through, let the manure fall, and the dung beetles carry it down. That is the nitrogen and the fertiliser.
The badges, explained
Certified Organic Farm certified Tap
No synthetic fertiliser, pesticides or herbicides on the paddocks. No added hormones and no routine antibiotics. An independent auditor checks the property and the records every year. Held since 2016.
National Standard The rulebook Tap
The rulebook that organic is measured against in Australia. Organic on its own is not a protected word on a label, so certified against the standard means somebody has actually checked.
US Organic Farm certified Tap
The American organic standard. Meeting it means the beef can be sold as organic in the United States, and it puts a second, separate set of eyes on the same farm.
Certified Beyond organic Tap
Organic is the floor. Biodynamic treats the whole property as one living system, so soil, pasture, water and cattle are managed together. Here that is big mobs, long rests and ground cover left standing.
of Australia Carbon farming Tap
Carbon farming means running the land so it holds more carbon than it gives off. Burnham has a registered project here, backed by the Queensland Land Restoration Fund. Clearing stopped and 190 hectares of native vegetation is coming back, which also protects koala habitat.
Certification covers the farm and its cattle. The processor that cuts and packs the beef is not a certified organic facility, so the packs are labelled organically raised rather than carrying an organic claim on the meat itself.
